According
to the chronicles of the time, Andrés de Jaén,
was keeping watch on the night of the 20th
to the 21st of December, 1502,
when he saw an object ‘shine’ on the beach sand. He
descends and finds a precious richly painted
gothic carving in heavy walnut wood, of some
eighty centimetres long, representing the Virgin Mary with Child in her
arms. The arrival of the sacred image to the deserted shores of the Alquián,
midway between She-Cat Cape and the town of Almería is evoked by one of a
great many century XV Moorish watchtowers
which, in their larger number in ruins, still stand watch alongside
the Andalusian coast and a beautiful sanctuary with a hermitage touch.

At
some ten kilometres off Ohanes,
at the Tices
range hills, at the foot of Sierra Nevada,
rises the Sanctuary to the Patron of Ohanes,
Our Lady of Consolation,
better known as the Virgin of Tices.
Old chronicles go that a soldier from the Beires township
returned from Italy at the beginning of the XVII century carrying
an image of the Virgin Mary in his pack and that, at sitting by the
hermitage built to Saint Mark, he could not continue his going due to the
heavy weight which, all of a sudden, he seemed to carry on now in his pack
which had previously been so light. Hearing
of such a prodigy, people from Ohanes and
Canjáyar built on the spot a sanctuary to
the Virgin. Archbishop
Juan Manuel Moscoso and Peralta ordered the
present monastery built. It is a contraction of the neoclassic type, with
two high towers which are seen from atop the Gador and the Filabres
range hills. Popular devotion goes very deep and to the place neighbours
stroll from near-by localities.
During
the Civil War
images of the Holy Virgin were destroyed by fire, the one made of
blackened wood which the soldier was supposed to have brought along,
returning years after, to its previous original painting. The
Pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Tices is held on the 14th August
and people walk up from the village of Ohanes to the sanctuary to kneel
down upon the Virgin for the night. On
the evening of the 15th the descend of the Virgin is organized.
She will stay in the Church till November to be returned next pilgrimage
to her sanctuary at Tices. The
chosen day was Sunday the 8th of March and early in the morning
we took our way toward Tices township belonging to the famed township of Ohanes, nowadays known
among some other things because of its festivals and in older times due to
its variety of golden grapes widely known as ‘from Ohanes’, which
those who are over our forties remember stacked in those small barrel-like
wooden caskets piled up in the Almería docks to be sailed abroad, what it
supposed both a great wealth to the locality and dock activity
along with the iron-ore ship loading well-known activity. The
day turned up windy and cold, with a heavy Northern wind that in the Alpujarras
thereabouts in the Almería Sierra Nevada was felt in our bodies, which
cost us to suffer a cold all along the coming week with the extra cost of
paper tissues not enclosed in the “other costs” monetary chapter.
The first call was answered by EA5AT and
the last contact at 2 o’clock was EA7FZK,
in-between the hurrying of some to establish contact (thinking that
propagation was failing?) with the current ‘pile up’ to change into
the rep call ‘ED7CVD,
from the hermitage of Tices, QRZ?’ by the end of the morning. After
350 QSO we
called our activation as ended and went to the near-by village of Padules
to pack up energy by having a big beefsteak
washed down with the appreciated wines of the place. I
want to thank Alfonso,
the Ohanes priest who
is so much devoted to Tices and its ecological crops, and also
Paco Moreno from the AROJE who helped me in
the installation and logging and
Francisco EA7GLU,
chairman to the local section
of the U.R.E. in Almería on account of their collaboration and to every
patient partner I made QSO with which gave sense to the activation.

Activation of the La Vecilla camp (León) from 1st to 15th August, 2000, on account of the XL OJE Anniversary (1960-2000), where all the Spanish provinces were worked out (TPEA), over 50 DXCC countries, and we had the opportunity to teach future leaders and specialists the pedagogic possibilities of fan radio broadcast as a hobby for youth.

Tradition
has it that in the year 1611, Juan Matías de
Peralta, sexton, saw for three continuous
nights that a procession of angels flied from the high altar to baptistery;
they made an excavation in that place
and the Cross
was dug out: As it seems, between 1502 and
1568 some pilgrim or priest of those visiting
the Holy Places might have gone to Canjayar and left there the cross they
were bringing from Jerusalem. When the Xmas. Time Moorish
rebellion in 1568 took place, the Cross was
hidden in an alcove in the Baptistery-Chapel wall. On April 19th,
1611, some building was going on at that place and the Cross showed up in
its hiding-place, being that appearance considered as a miraculous
occurrence by everyone. Patron
festivals are held from 19th
April in honour of the Sacred
Cross. Next day, the procession of the Saint
Blass range hills takes place, where a priest blesses the fields to obtain
better crops next year.
| Of the Serón Castle, that overlooks the whole village, there only remain the homage-tower and part of the wall. Tradition has it that during the Moorish rebellion the castle was surrounded by the D. Juan de Austria’s troops, himself being mortally wounded by an arrow and dying a few days later. The battling after the surrounding of the castle must have been terrific due to its strategic location and to the bravery of its defenders. During activation we were accompanied by EA7SH resident in Serón and good friend from years back. | ||

Ferreira
is located in the marquees influence area of
Zenete, which capital
is Guadix, in the province of Granada,
with boundaries with Almería and in the direction of la Ragua
mountain-port, separating both provinces in
the Sierra Nevada Range. The
activation on this sanctuary corresponds to an invitation from our friend
Loli, who proposed us that modality some time
ago and which it would be useful to let both her village and the sanctuary
be known.

Pechina
is a locality close by the capital town holding a large tradition, located
upon the low Andarax
and dedicated for a long time to the growing
of citric, especially orange
trees. It
accounts for a small hermitage off the
village, by the village access road, devoted
to the Virgin del Carmen.

Overlooking
from a hill range over Viator this small
sanctuary may be met which lodges the Sacred
Cross, giving name to the adjoining quarters.
